An Update on Your Gift of Clean Water to Ugandan Children

Feb 26, 2025 | Uganda

Church leaders, Compassion staff and representatives from Living Water International plan the intervention.

Mt. Horeb Church,

Thank you for your investment in providing safe water and improved sanitation to two Compassion church partners in the Mayuge area of Uganda. Only 55% of residents in the Mayuge District have access to safe water and just 67% of the population has access to safe sanitation. Children are especially vulnerable to waterborne diseases, and they also face risks when they walk long distances to fetch water.

Compassion International is collaborating with Living Water International to implement a comprehensive water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) intervention that benefits 3,440 Compassion participants, caregivers and community members.

Planning for Safe Drinking Water

This intervention aims to ensure holistic community transformation and reduce the rates of WaSH-related diseases. This will be achieved by increasing access to safe water, improving sanitation, and enhancing hygiene practices through infrastructure development, behavioral change initiatives, and collective engagement. Churches are essential in mobilizing the community and promoting sustainable solutions.

Intervention Summary
  • The design team met in July 2024 to develop project plans and create preliminary sanitation facility designs.
  • A leadership engagement meeting was held in December 2024. The meeting covered monitoring and evaluation, financial accountability and community participation.
  • Next steps include holding vision workshops for the churches and community leaders.
