Poverty Threatens The Lives of Mothers and Babies

An estimated 8.3 million children are living on less than $3.65 per day in the Latin American countries where Compassion works today. In Mexico alone, over 2 million children are living in poverty — a reality that severely impacts their health, nutrition, education, and safety in a multitude of ways. For pregnant mothers and newborns, the dangers of poverty are especially acute. Mortality rates are high, and babies that do survive often suffer from malnutrition and sickness that hinders their long-term development. Globally:

    • 10,100+ babies less than 1 year old die every day — resulting in roughly 3.7 million deaths every year. 
    • 45% of deaths in children under age 5 are linked to malnutrition.
    • 2 in 5 children are at risk of not reaching their development potential because of poverty and malnutrition.
    • 13% of deaths in children under age 2 could be prevented through increased breastfeeding rates.

Compassion’s Record of Success

Compassion’s comprehensive approach to infant survival has proven effective. In 2024:

More than 13,500 babies were born to Compassion-assisted mothers

100% of infants were monitored for malnutrition, and every baby who needed it was offered treatment

Over 75% of births were attended by a skilled birth assistant

Nearly 92% of all newborns registered in Compassion’s Survival program had a normal birth weight

Survival Program: Launching a Brighter Future

The first few years of life, beginning with pregnancy, are crucial for the healthy, long-term development of babies. During this time, small investments in key areas can mean the difference between life and death. Improving caregiver nutrition during pregnancy and promoting breastfeeding lead to healthier babies. Suitable toys and activities stimulate better cognitive and physical development. Even minor improvements in a caregiver’s education dramatically reduce infant and child mortality.

When Compassion’s local church partners can offer support at the earliest moment in the lives of children, their opportunities to thrive multiply. That’s why Compassion’s Survival program concentrates on serving pregnant mothers in poverty, supporting them through pregnancy and birth, and helping their babies reach their crucial first birthdays — a milestone that, without intervention, is often unattainable in developing communities.

Through partnership with local churches, these efforts have saved and improved the lives of thousands of vulnerable babies and their mothers. The Survival program provides essential services such as:

    • One-to-one care from a Survival Specialist.
    • Basic nutrition and vitamins.
    • Prenatal and postnatal care.
    • Skilled birth attendants.
    • Breastfeeding support and instruction.
    • Regular growth monitoring and immunizations.
    • Spiritual guidance and nurture.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

Iglesia del Nazareno El Alfarero

Compassion invites you to partner with Iglesia del Nazareno El Alfarero in Chiapas, Mexico. The church is located in a small community, home to about 300 people. Typical houses are constructed of cement floors, brick walls, and tin roofs. In this area, most adults make a living by working on plantations, herding livestock, or performing domestic services. The average family income is equivalent to $218 per month, and the unemployment rate is 30%. Local medical services for pregnant mothers are very limited, and they must travel 40 minutes to reach the nearest hospital. The average age of a first-time mother in this community is 16, and only 50% of mothers give birth in a medical facility.

The Survival program is working to lower the rates of maternal and infant mortality in this community by helping mothers and infants obtain health care, proper nutrition, and vital resources such as income-generation training. Each center typically enrolls 10-15 infant-caregiver pairs. As babies reach their first birthdays and transition to Compassion’s Child Sponsorship Program, additional mothers will benefit from your gift by joining the Survival program over the course of the year.
